Extra-long basmati rice

Extra-long basmati is a rice with grains longer than 8 mm that become even longer when cooked and remain fluffy. The grains have a delicate, slightly nutty aroma and tender flavor, absorbing spices and broth well, making them ideal for pilaf, biryani, and risotto. When purchasing, choose rice without impurities and broken grains, and rinse it with cold water before cooking to prevent clumping.

About

Extra-long basmati is not just rice, but a tool for creating light, airy dishes. The grains of this variety stretch almost twice during cooking while remaining firm and not sticking together. This is its main advantage: each grain remains separate, creating the perfect texture for pilaf, biryani, or a curry side dish.

Aroma and taste

Basmati has a delicate nutty aroma that becomes especially pronounced when cooking. The taste is mild, slightly sweet, not dominating, yet distinctive enough to complement spicy spices or delicate sauces. This makes it a versatile partner for dishes from different cuisines — from Indian to Middle Eastern.

How to cook and use

Before cooking, rice should be rinsed under cold water until completely clear — this removes starch and prevents clumping. The ratio of water to rice is approximately 1:1.5. Extra-long basmati rice cooks for 12–15 minutes over medium heat, after which it is removed from heat and left to rest under a lid for 5–10 minutes. The result is a fluffy, long, elegant side dish.

  • Pilaf and biryani — classic application, where long grains look spectacular
  • Side dish for curry, tandoori and spicy dishes — neutral base that doesn't compete with spices
  • Rice salads and cold dishes — grains hold their shape and don't become mushy
  • Sushi and rolls — less traditional, but some chefs use it for unusual texture

Selection and Storage

When purchasing, pay attention to the color — quality extra-long basmati rice has a light cream or white shade, without yellow spots or cloudiness. The grains should be whole, without cracks. Rice is stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place — under proper conditions it retains its properties for a year or even longer. Over time, rice becomes drier and cooks slightly faster, which does not diminish its quality.

Extra-long basmati rice pairs well with any Eastern spices — cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, turmeric. It combines beautifully with vegetables, seafood, and meat. If you're cooking something where the texture of the side dish matters, this rice is a reliable choice.
