Cherry tomatoes
Small sweet tomatoes with thin skin and juicy flesh that are eaten whole or cut in half. Thanks to their concentrated flavor and natural sweetness, they work well in fresh salads, as a cheese appetizer, in pastas, and as a side dish for hot meals. When selecting, look for firm tomatoes without dents, and when storing, keep them at room temperature away from direct sunlight — this way they'll retain their flavor longer.
About
Cherry tomatoes are small tomatoes the size of a walnut that, when properly selected, become a real treasure in the kitchen. Their compactness is deceptive: inside, a bright, sweet taste and meaty texture are concentrated. Working with them is simple, and the result is almost always impressive.
Taste and Aroma
Cherry tomatoes are sweeter than regular tomatoes due to their high sugar concentration. The taste is bright and tomato-like, with a pleasant acidity that doesn't bite the tongue. The aroma is fresh and summery, especially pronounced in ripe fruits. If a tomato smells of grass and earth — that's a good sign, it has ripened properly.
Where to use
The main advantage of cherry tomatoes is their versatility. They are good whole — which means they are quick and convenient to prepare. There is no need to cut them, and often no need to peel them.
- Fresh salads: cherry tomatoes add brightness and sweetness, hold their shape well when tossed
- Appetizers and platters: whole tomatoes on skewers or in salad with mini mozzarella — this is a classic
- Hot dishes: become softer when baked in the oven, flavor concentrates, a light caramelized layer forms
- Sauces and purees: ideal for quick tomato sauces, as they soften quickly
- Canning: perfect for pickling whole thanks to their firm skin
Pairings
The sweetness of cherry is well balanced by acidity: vinegar, lemon, wine. They pair well with garlic, basil, and oregano. Olive oil emphasizes their flavor. Interesting when paired with spicy seasonings — pepper, ginger. Great alongside soft cheeses, avocado, and fresh herbs.
Selection and Storage
When shopping, look for tomatoes that yield slightly when pressed, but are not soft. The skin should be smooth, without cracks or dark spots. The color should be intense and uniform. The brighter the red, the riper the fruit. Smell is the main indicator: ripe cherry tomatoes should smell like tomato, not grass.
- At room temperature, cherry tomatoes keep for 3–5 days, gradually losing moisture and becoming sweeter
- In the refrigerator on the vegetable shelf they will last a week, but the taste will be less pronounced
- Do not put them in a plastic bag — air circulation is needed, otherwise mold will appear
- Underripe tomatoes will ripen on the windowsill in 2–3 days
If cherry tomatoes are needed for a hot dish, choose firmer specimens — they won't fall apart during heat treatment. For salads, sweeter, softer tomatoes are more suitable.
