Croutons

Crispy bread slices dried in an oven or toasted to a golden color and often seasoned with salt, spices, or garlic. Used as a standalone snack, added to soups for texture and crunch, and serve as a base for breadcrumbs or coating in various dishes. When selecting, pay attention to moisture content — quality croutons should be completely dry and crispy, with no signs of dampness or musty odor.

About

Croutons are crispy cubes or slices of bread dried to a state where they become almost brittle. In cooking, they are a versatile helper: from a garnish for soups to a component in breading for cutlets. They appear in dishes unexpectedly often, although people rarely think about them separately.

Where and how to use them

Croutons work well in soups — they absorb the broth, soften, and add volume to the dish while remaining intact without turning to mush. In salads, they create a contrasting crunchy texture, especially in Caesar or other creamy versions. They can be used as a breading instead of breadcrumbs when finely crushed — the bread is dried evenly, so the coating turns out even and crispy.

Croutons are great as a standalone snack — with spices, garlic, or simply with salt, they become a crispy alternative to bread for beer or as a quick bite. They can be added to ground meat for cutlets or meatballs to give structure and make the dish more crumbly.

Selection and Storage

When buying, pay attention to uniform color — light spots may indicate improper drying. Crackers should be hard, without soft areas. If you're buying flavored ones, check the production date: spices lose their aroma over time, and crackers become tasteless.

Store crackers in a tightly sealed container in a dry place — they are hygroscopic and quickly absorb moisture from the air, losing their crunchiness. With proper storage, they maintain their quality for several months. If the crackers have softened, they can be dried in the oven at a low temperature for 10–15 minutes.

Make it yourself

Homemade croutons are often tastier than store-bought ones. Cut the bread into cubes or slices, spread on a baking sheet and dry in the oven at 120–150 degrees for 20–40 minutes, depending on the size. Stir occasionally to ensure even drying. If you want to add flavor, mix the bread with oil, garlic and spices before drying.

Homemade versions are great because you control the quality of the original bread and can experiment with flavors. Black bread will give a more pronounced, slightly bitter taste, white — neutral and versatile. Croutons made from yesterday's bread turn out better than from fresh bread.
